In our 80th podcast, we talk to Lucy, taproom manager for Sureshot Brewing.

Officially opening Nov 18th, the Sureshot Taproom is the newest addition to the Manchester beer scene. Lucy is the taproom manager and was brought in early on to overlook the building of the tap in a railway arch.

She tells us about the the work that has gone into the tap, what she did and did want not for it, and her plans for it.

Lucy has worked in the beer industry for over a decade now, doing pretty much every job you can do, except brewing (she’s tells us why in the podcast). So we talk over the industry, the roles she’s had, and with it follow the path of craft beer in the UK.

We also discuss the relatively short history of the brewery, and find out what it’s like to wander around a beer fest in an inflatable shark costume.

In our 64th podcast, we bring you the three talks we hosted at the Friends & Family & beer festival on Feb 21st and 22nd of 2020.

The festival graciously asked us to host a talk at each session that would be free for fest goers to attend. We decided to do Brewery Focus chats where we interviewed three breweries pouring at the festival that we thought stood out.

We chose Salopian Brewery of Shrewsbury, Young Master Brewery of Hong Kong and Trve Brewing Co. of Denver.

The first talk featured is with Wilf Nelson, Managing Director of Salopian Brewery. We discuss the longevity of the brewery and how they have changed and adapted to the changes in the UK beer scene over the last two decades, amongst other things.

In our 62nd podcast, we talk to Oli Banks, head brewer at Stigbergets Bryggeri.

The Swedish brewery has made a name for itself over the past few years for their stunning IPAs, so we talk to Oli about their hoppy reputation, how it came about and where it has taken them.

Oli was born in England so gives us an insight into moving over to Gothenburg to work at the brewery, and what he’s been doing at Stigbergets ever since.

A big part of beer in Sweden is the quite strict laws they have around alcohol. Probably the most obviousis the government run stores called Systembolaget that are the only places in Sweden you can buy beer over 3.5%. Oli tells us how the laws impact brewing, what the beer industry does to work with Systembolaget, and gives us a overview of how the Swedish laws around beer work.

In our 47th podcast, we talk to Northern Monk Brew Co. Managing Director and co-founder, Russell Bisset.
In March 2018 Northern Monk announced ‘Northern Rising’ a crowdfunding programme to raise half a million pounds to expand the brewery. They ended up raising 1.5 million.

As the man who set up the brewery, Russell tells us why they chose to crowdfund, the process of going though with it and the risks and rewards that came with that decision.

At the time of recording the campaign had ended so Russell gives us more detail about how they will spend the money, what he hopes the expansion will achieve and his first thoughts on the proposed taprooms coming to Manchester and London.

We also hear how the brewery has grown so quickly in just 4 years, Russells thoughts on why breweries are heading the crowdfunding route, macro brewery buyouts and more.

In our 46th podcast, we sit down with Steph from MASH to talk about the use of isinglass and veganism in the beer industry.

After a twitter poll we did asking ‘Should all beer bottles & cans specify if they are vegan or not?’ we got a big response so decided to delve a little deeper into the subject. 
Asking why beer isnt labeled if its vegan or non-vegan? Should isinglass still be used and why it is? and more.

Steph talks us through the process of isinglass and why it is used, as well as offering an insight into its pros and cons. She also tells us about the different ethics of veganism and how that can effect the way it is marketed.

We discuss if bar staff should know what is in the beer they are serving and if breweries should label kegs and cask if they are fined or not.

In our 45th podcast, we talk to Jeremy and Jamie of the Manchester bottle shop Beermoth. Arguably the most well regarded bottle shop in the country Beermoth celebrates its 5th birthday today (Feb 1st 2018).

Sustainability is a big thing for Tom so we discuss how he has incorporated that into the brewery, as well as telling us about the hops and barley he grows himself.
